Swiss Cottage

A small North West London ward positioned where St John’s Wood, Primrose Hill, Belsize Park and South Hampstead converge.

The epicentre for this area is the intersection between Avenue Road and Finchley Road where Swiss Cottage Underground station is located. This lively area features many shops, the Hampstead Theatre (which also hosts a regular farmer’s market in its courtyard), the Swiss Cottage Community Centre, and of course, the Ye Old Swiss Cottage itself.

Swiss Cottage was created for the May 1978 election and was redrawn in May 2002. In its previous form, Swiss Cottage covered just South Hampstead, while the former Adelaide ward covered the parts of the ward the east of Finchley Road (including Ye Olde Swiss Cottage itself).

The ward will be abolished for the 2022 election. Its area will be divided between the newly created Primrose Hill and South Hampstead wards.

Neighbouring St John’s Wood has a wide range of quality housing stock including grand Regency villas, large stucco-fronted Victorian terraced houses, spacious 1930s mansion blocks, 1960s apartment blocks and a number of contemporary purpose-built developments. Most of St John’s Wood is a designated Conservation Area and its houses are listed by English Heritage.

Swiss Cottage provides residents with easy access to excellent boutique shopping in both villages of Belsize Park and Primrose Hill as well as those found on St John’s Wood High Street

The area’s namesake, Ye Olde Swiss Cottage, is an absolute must for both locals and tourists alike, or you can head to St John’s Wood High Street where you’ll find popular chains, including Café Rouge, Starbucks and The Ivy. There are several excellent local pubs as well, including The Ordnance Arms (a Samuel Smith pub on Ordnance Hill) as well as a wide range of establishments to suit all tastes. The Good Life Eatery, Brasserie Café Med and Maido Sushi are our top picks of the area’s many popular delights.

Nearby Primrose Hill provides an expanse of open green space and far-reaching views across London from its peak. Further, Regent’s Park (one of The Royal Parks of London) is situated directly south of Primrose Hill Park and boasts 410-acres of extensive walking/running paths, stunning rose gardens, an open-air theatre, a boating lake and the London Zoo, as well as the largest outdoor sports area in Central London.

St John’s Wood Underground Station is on the Jubilee Line (Zone 2) with direct links to Bond Street in the West End (just five minutes away) and east to Canary Wharf (20 minutes). National rail services operate from nearby Paddington and Marylebone stations providing direct links to Heathrow, Birmingham and The West Country. St John’s Wood is on numerous local bus routes, offering direct connections to many parts of London.
